Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is situated around the artificially made Periyar Lake . A Dam constructed across the Mullaperiyar River during the British reign in 1895 by the Maharaja of Travancore made up the manmade Periyar Lake. The resultant Lake and its surrounding forest area were abundant in wildlife such as tigers, leopards, yalk, elephant, wild pig, sambar, gaur, flying squirrel etc.

Periyar Tiger Reserve sprawled over an area of 600 abvove square km is one the major Tiger Reserve park in India and calm and cool eco tourism distination in Kerala. It's located close to the boarder of Tamil Nadu on the way to Madurai from the coastal areas. The rich jungle around the Periyar Lake and Mangaladevi peak is one of the world's most evergreen forest.

The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary was delcared as a Tiger Reserve in 1978. We can have the unique experience of wildlife in front of your eyes during the boat ride across the Periyar Lake. This fascinating wildlife rserve - "The Periyar Wild Life Sanctuary "is a big hub for over 250 species of birds. The greatest attraction during the boat ride across the Mullaperiyar Lake will be the large herds of wild elephants on both banks of the lake.

Kumily the nearby town to Thekkady acts as the township and shopping area for spices, elachi, pepper, tea, coffee, clove....etc.
